Practically Speaking
Kyle and her husband moved to Brookfield in 1986. She became active in local politics and started blogging in 2004. Her focus is primarily on local issues but often includes state and national topics, too. Kyle looks at things from the taxpayers' perspective in a creative, yet down to earth way, addressing them from a practical point of view.
Walker rally made political hay, ad gained national attention
At a rally held in the shadow of the Hoan Bridge on Monday, Scott Walker drove home his point: "Yes we can" stop the train!
Wisconsin cannot afford this $810 million dollar train, that virtually no one will ride, and we certainly cannot afford the $10 million per year siphoned off from the Wisconsin Transportation Fund to pay for its operating costs! Or in other words, we must spend our precious tax dollars wisely on Roads not Rails. (My phrase.)
The weather was indeed perfect for that rally on Monday, but the sun didn't just literally shine on Walker and the attendees in Milwaukee, Walker also captured national attention with his "Yes We Can" stop the train ad.
Here is just a sampling: "The Wall Street Journal: 'Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, a Republican candidate for governor, has been running a campaign advertisement attacking another stimulus program Democrats had hoped would prove popular: a high-speed rail link between Milwaukee and Madison', Time: 'Essential viewing,' Fox News : '...Walker, by the way, is running an ad that ties Barrett to the Obama stimulus package by way of a controversial rail project,' Politico: “Today, when Obama is in Wisconsin, Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker will capitalize on all the attention to the presidential visit by holding a rally to protest the construction of a stimulus-funded high-speed train...' PBS : 'Walker hammers away at what he calls an $810 million boondoggle to build a high-speed rail line from Madison to Milwaukee,'" and more.
Walker calls our $810 million dollar "high" speed train stimulus grant a "perfect example of the out of control taxing and spending in Washington and Madison." I couldn't agree more.
If you are against the waste-of-money train, go to Scott Walker's NoTrain.com to register your opposition.

Tarzan, she has answered your meaningless questions. Ignoring you is a big and wonderful answer. Santa kind of alerted you to the fact that you stink out loud. Try to stay away from those scattered smokeable gardens in the jungle, your abuse of them shows.

Well Santa, as long as you are off subject here,I will join you. I agree with what you have to say, besides there is nothing wrong with the light poles, spent $ 7,000 for two engineering firms analysis. Same money pit. Must be friends of the school official who recomends temporary lights. More really great ideology like repaving Brookfield Road again after only a few years traffic on a road that was 100 % great shape. Can you feel the stimulus love money. Oh Yes!

Kyle, you just knew it was going to happen didn't you? Like the rest of us you've just been waiting and waiting and waiting to hear all about it, right? Well, it's finally happened! If you noticed today's community news you saw an article entitled: "Official recommends Elmbrook pay half the cost of temporary lights at East field".

jshaw, I know what little I know about Milwaukee to Madison commuting only through observation when I used I94 to travel both north of, south of, and to Madison. Not much of the I94 traffic was Madison bound.

You ought to see about using an anonymizer. Then they won't know it's you even when they do smell the scent. It works for me: virtually no one knows that I am Jim Sullivan in real life!
Is that a new chimp I saw you with the other day?

Compared to this, our Elmbrook Schools are going to look Kenyan! We've got to bring this up at the next board meeting. Hey $600M is only a bond issue away. And after all, it's for the children!

Each of whom comes in at 6' 3", weighs 240, can bench press the coaching staff and run the 40 in milliseconds.
How about we get creative here and attach a miner's lamp to each child's helmet? $29.95 a piece at walmart. Or the deluxe model at $59.95 per.
After all, it's about the children!

Seems as though some impossibly high paid ESD staffer has decided to ask the board for a paltry $26K to provide temporary lighting on the East football field so the children will be able to enjoy their games played at the traditional time.
Of course half of the money will be provided by the district and the other half by parent teacher organizations et. al. much as was the cost of the artificial turf for the children!
Then, next summer when we can bury the cost in the budget, the full cost of $200K for new light poles will be allocated and the poles put up for the children.
What of the temporary lights? Who cares? Hey they were temporary weren't they? And only cost $26K.
And they were for the children!

I don't offer that as science, merely observation. But who has offered any more precise numbers, and how were the obtained? Certainly the state ought to know. But I don't see anything claiming to be their statistics.
In principal I really like the idea of fast rail as a replacement for commuting. We've got to do something about getting cars off the road whenever possible. But it has to conform to certain social expectations we have come to enjoy. Among these are that it needs to be accompanied at one end by inexpensive parking lots, and at the other end by inexpensive public transportation which gets the commuter within easy walking distance of his destination. Without that, it's just a pipe dream.
Even a duplication of the airport paradigm would work: drive to and park. Then take the train and rent a car at your destination.
If we're going to spend $800M (well over $1T when actually complete) let's at least get something useful out of it!
