Go Prince or Prince Go

Go Prince or Prince Go. I had written this blog a few weeks ago and kept putting it aside because each game might change things. But things are not going to change. The Brewers cannot win their division with the present pitching staff even if Prince becomes an all-star first baseman, which he is not. There are many first basemen in the major leagues that are better.

At the end of next season Prince and/or his agent will demand a huge salary far above his weight which is another problem. The Brewers will not pay him.

We need a gold glove first baseman who can also hit in the clutch, if even a single, like former Cub Mark Grace. There are players on the present roster who can do that at first base. Corey Hart, a former infielder, Casey at bat who needs a position without more movement (bad legs). Ryan Braun will not switch cause he won't be an all star at first base. Matt Gamel is having a weak year in the minors.

To the point, Prince is not a game breaker.

Trade Prince now for someone like who I like Oswalt of Houston.

Look at the bright side. Rickie Weeks finally became a good lead off hitter. The relief pitching is very good. The catchers are an improvement. Escobar keeps his cool. Lorenzo Cain may now  be ready for game time. The pitching for next year has only 2 starters, Yo and Randy W. The rest can take a long rest.  Get pitching while you can. On or two more proven starting pitchers and Prince will not be missed.

  1. agreed. they still compare coaches to lombardi and playboys to hornung/mcgee. bf is like many other high end players------they dont want to practice in pre season.
  2. Dick, what'dya say about the Packers assigning #4 to some nice rookie this season? I think it would send out a refreshing "Favre Finis" signal which would allow Packer fans to move past the forever high schooler from Mississippi.

If the guy plays this year, we may well win one against the Vikes anyhow. If he doesn't play this year, we'll probably win both games.

Either way, I think it's time for Green Bay to physically disconnect from the league's nabob of narcissism, and get the Favre monkey off our backs!

Let ziffy hang his hat on this bird. We've had enough of him.
  3. as legend announcer mel allens said'how about that", with reference to the corey hart extension. the irony is that it is not all about hart but is about prince. why? prince is gone one way or another. hart came up as a ss/3b and went to rf to get in the lineup. either hart or gamel play 1b or rf. weeks signs long term and thus you have a decent lineup, except............for starting pitchers. where do you get them ? in trade for prince (maybe one) or from the minor leagues. someone in the system has to step up and teach the young pitchers to throw strikes. with that done look out 2011. lorenzo cain goes to cf and thats ok. no more signing of free agent pitchers, now that oswalt is gone.

BTW. packers are still weak at offensive line and defensive backs. before they talk super bowl the must be supermen.
  4. NO.im forever a baseball fan and the brewers are the best we have. it is also proper for a true fan to gripe. here are some of mine: fielder. an uppercut hitter with a big belly; braun. a glamour boy awed by his own fame; mcghee. a short term would be star; escobar. where's the beef ?; weeks. never gives up; gomez. a bad deal for both sides; hart. a keeper. the entire pitching staff. just throw strikes. the entire hitting brigade. contact, contact, contact. the mgr. not a milw.or wi. image. must go. the owner, mark a. a really good guy who made a poor investment by listening to melvin. next year. trade sveum for money (don); bring in lorenzo cain for cf and matt gamel to replace counsell as a ph. sign edmonds for inspiration and release or trade parra, narveson and bush. that will delete 3 sure losses. go to the farm system and bring in the best of the rest to replace them. that will make us all happy. have fielder and braun train with rod carew. and last-----go packers. oh and sign axford to a 3yr contract so he dont go back to canada and hide. if they do all that and dont sign any more free agents they have a chance. plus, release inglett and gerut. one more thing. get rid of that pitching coach with the long hair who runs back and forth with silly messages to the pitchers. nothing get a pitcher more nervous than to have a guy with statistics tell you the batter's weakness is a low rising 4 fingered spitball that catches the umpire off guard. this pitching guhru takes the mound like a presidential candidate and ignores the entire infield and catcher who know exactly what is going on. wake up! starting pitchers have 4-5 days or more between starts to think and re-think. dont mess with them on their day.
  5. How about for the rest of the season instead of playing the national anthem at the opening they play "Taps"?
  6. t will not end until mark a. realizes that he is being duped into spending tons of money for the likes of suppan, gagne, hoffman, hawkins, d.davis and a host of other pitchers who are past their prime. the blame is on gen.mgr. melvin who has to go. the owner is a quality guy who wants a winning team. given the choice any true baseball fan would rather see young pitchers than old pitchers, unless they are in a torrid pennant race and bring on a don sutton or rollie fingers. macha is an ok mgr but his silence is not golden. how ? fire melvin. get a mgr from among former brewers who relate to the players and fans (sveum or don money). deal away parra and d.davis, if possible. bring up jeffries to pitch and see if he has what it takes. give mark rogers a chance to pitch.
wign rickie weeks long term and play fielder next year and make a run for thepennant and let them prove their value. the only bench player worth keeping is edmonds. bring in lorenzo cain to play center field and challenge gomez. forget the free agency market . those players only want money and are not willing to play hard with injuries. next yr with axford as the closer and yo as the ace we are a team in the making. starting pitchers to choose amongst will be narveson, bush, wolf (ug!), and one or two of the strike thowing minor leagers. maybe the cubs will cut loose zambrano for us to have the intensity, although a bit over tghe top, to play. nothing wrong with an athlete getting mad at himself. a couple of beers usually settles him down. at least if we lose it will still be a young team.
  7. Sweep? Did you say sweep? Cincy was asleep in game one, but they humiliated the Brewers after that and showed them they aren't ready for the big leagues! Another crappy season for the Brewers. Will it ever end?
  8. the upcoming series with cincy is critical to the season. with a sweep the brewers are in the race and need all the hitting they have. if they are swept look for trades. if they break even look for a run at long term deals for fielder, hart and weeks, the core of the team. with tevor hoffman doing what vets do in using his savvy to get back into form anything can happen. all of the above 3 will be hard to replace and are a known quality. besides, the owner has to look at fan appeal for next year. signing casey at bat is ok too. we found with suppan (0-6 with cards) and wolf/hawkins, etc. that vet pitchers do not have the longevity as the young guys do. maybe narveson/bush/parra are not great but they will be around on some team. doug davis was a mistake. cant afford any more mistakes. above ALL A PITCHER MUST THROW STRIKES. axford knows this and is not afraid to be hit. this team next year with lorenzo cain and a couple young pitchers will be a top rated team. too bad they did not have jim edmonds 5 years ago. he is a real pro.
  9. with all the trade talk will the brewers keep hart and fielder and go with their farm system ? just a thought. to trade for a sore arm pitcher gets them nowhere. remember spahn, sain and pray for rain?
  10. by taking prince out of the lineup it will decrease his trade value cause other teams may suspect an injury or discontent. the farm system has 1st baseman galore just in case. now he can be traded, get rid of his present and future salary and get a pitcher or two. in my time/including as a mgr/we only had staring pitchers and would let the pitcher get hit hard. now, some mgrs let the guy pitch to teach him a lesson. js says wolf asked to stay in the game to save the bullpen. thats a new one. moist people dont realize that baseball mgrs demand a high salary. last yr they could have signed dale sveum or don money, both well liked former brewers with sound baseball knowledge. that dont always work. neither do i get the bringing up and down of lorenzo cain who has the tools to play next year or sooner.
