Checking in on school renovations

As a Brookfield East class of '02 grad. I was thrilled to hear last year that Brookfield would be renovating its two high schools.  It seems like only yesterday that I was volunteering for the wonderful group East 2000 & Beyond to raise funds for a new football field.  That said, even as a freshman at East I can remember begrudgingly admitting that Brookfield Central was in far greater need of repair.  Thankfully, the district decided to reward the community and upgrade both of its schools.

So now that renovations are well under way, how does it all look?  Which school is further along, and how does the public seem to feel about the undertaking?  What still needs to be done?

Consider me curious.

  1. Jeff, I believe it's fair to say that Elmbrook compares well against Wisconsin's schools and probably nationally. That's like saying Sandra Bullock is prettier than the average woman, but how does she compare to the Miss Universe contestants? The facts are that the U.S. ranks below 10th place in all meaningful academics and we're falling further behind. Our schools and universities have lowered their standards and expectations, and spend too much time on subjects that are "political". No matter how one tries to hide it, we are not the world leaders anymore in knowledge. The Asians spend much more time in class, have lots of homework, and the parents DEMAND performance from their children.
  2. If by very little empirical experience you mean I'm speaking like a 25-year-old, then I guess you've got me nailed.

If what you say is true, then I was unaware that the group was unable to come up with the complete funds. I can say, however, that during my time working with them no one was looking for handout. There was a lot of hard work being put into the fund-raising and in my view the organizers had every intention of following through on their goals.

Was "reward" the wrong term to use? Probably. But as someone who works in and grew up around the teaching profession I believe strongly in investing in education, and I think in Brookfield you have two very fine high schools worthy of good facilities. If the performance wasn't there, perhaps I wouldn't feel the same way.
  3. You're stretching Elfie!
  4. A 'ken' sense is midway between a 'keen' and a 'kean' sense, Tweets. Sort of like El gato, El coño, El gatito!
  5. I may have a "ken" sense.....and I think it's better than having a "barbie" sense.
  6. You've certainly got a point there El! And you seem to have retained your ken sense of the commie/liberal mindset. Guess I've become a bit less diligent ever since Rush Limbo began protecting us. Thanks for the jacking up!
  7. Elf, his biggest shock was when he plugged his 120v razor into the 220v outlet! If you're miffed because I said he sounds like the typical young liberal, do you think anyone who either pays the bills or is conservative would say "Thankfully, the district decided to reward the community and upgrade both of its schools." Only liberals think higher government spending and higher taxes are a reward. At 25 he's got very little empirical experience, and working in a foreign country he probably pays little to no taxes, so he's happy to see someone pay for him.
  8. Jeff, you'll have to excuse El Rusty Gate. Ever since he layed his harley out on the expressway a while back his neurons have occasionally shorted through producing comments like the one he left above.

Oh, and the $62 million he alludes to is actually more like $120 million including fees and interest. But as the elmbrook parents say: "It's their money. We're not living here after the kids graduate!"

As far as the particulars are concerned, you can see a variety of pictures of both work in progress as well as completions by going to:

El Broken Gate is correct, however, in asserting that Molly Foo and her elmbrook parents group did cop out leaving the school district holding the bag for the artificial turf fiasco.

I believe that this will be the last parent-district venture of any magnitude to slip by the school board for quite a while.

Say how about telling us a little about your Japanese language training. That sounds daunting to say the least. I'd also bet that readers would be interested in learning more about modern Japanese culture. What was your biggest shock?
  9. Well, my earstwhile fundraiser, are you aware that the people who were going to pay for the football field have failed to come close to doing so? The district rewarded the community with a $62 million bill for the upgrades. You sound like the typical young liberal!
