Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
Thanks for the heads up, Kathryn. I missed that one.

Hi Kyle,
I saw a few minutes of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on
Charlie Rose this week. I don't know much about him, was pleased in
general when he was appointed, being that he was seen as outside the
educational establishment and in favor of the charter school movement.
I think having lots of choices in education is good for families.
However, this man has some alarming ideas. Duncan wants to restructure
community life around the schools; perhaps a great idea when
communities are broken and disfunctional, but hardly a good choice for
healthy families and communities. He spoke of keeping schools open
12-13 hours a day (actually our high schools are open at least that
long most days), holding school year round, 6 or 7 days a week, and
having potlucks! The President's agenda for education seems more
conservative than Mr. Duncan's, but Mr. Duncan bears watching.
Regards,
Kathryn
