Brookfield City News

Cindy moved to Brookfield in 1994 with her husband and three children in tow. It's been a very interesting seventeen years.

Rest in Peace, dear Jim Garvens

Oh, what horrible news.

I don't even know if it's made it to BrookfieldNOW yet, but 3rd District Alderman Jim Garvens is gone.

It's impossible to have been elected in Brookfield and not know what Jim Garvens meant to this city. Did you know there's a subdivision named for his family? And if you sat through even a few meetings, you'd know Jim Garvens famous "I was in business for..." line.

But listen. Even a cranky old bat like me has to confess. Jim Garvens was one heck of a guy.

1) He was smart. Stupid smart. I-only-hope-to-look-that-good smart.

2) He loved his family. His stories always made me smile.

3) He embraced his humanity. Alderman Ron Balzer and I visited Jim in the hospital after his stroke many years ago. His "life happens" attitude warms my heart even now. And obviously, he didn't let that slow him down much, did it?

4) He was loyal. I have never known a man to love this city more.

It's not like me to cry. Jim Garvens earned it.
