I have been a citizen of Brookfield for 24 years and a member of the Brookfield Common Council for eight years, including two years as president. Many blogs in the past have contained false and distorting info about public affairs. I will provide truthful information and maintain an influence on city policy.
The voters of the Elmbrook School District passed the high schools remodeling referendum in the April 2008 election. However, administrative, educational, and organizational policies, and procedures and organizational structures district-wide need to be revisited.
Why should we have a top to bottom review of District operations? Nationwide, with a few exceptions, school enrollments are declining. Every local district that our Committee visited last year had decreasing enrollment. In Florida, Volusia County Florida school district which includes Daytona Beach, recently proposed eliminating 467 jobs (260 teachers) totaling $31 million to offset declining enrollment, decreasing state funding, and increasing costs for health insurance and utilities. Three elementary schools have already been closed. More recently, adjacent Orange County (Orlando) proposed eliminating 500 positions. Wisconsin state finances are no different. The emphasis must now be on reducing costs. Tax revenues will never increase significantly.
