President Obama, Slipping fast!, Socialism / Marxism

This was a bumper sticker idea I heard on Vicki McKenna's radio show Monday. She was taking listener's suggestions for a whole host of bumper sticker ideas. I was in the car at the time, but I did manage to write down this one. I think it sums up the direction many Americans feel our country is headed toward: Government control of every aspect of our lives.

She will have the many suggestions up on her web page and you can vote for your favorite. McKenna hopes to have some made into bumper stickers in time for the Wisconsin Tea Party on April 15th.

The Un-Fairness Doctrine not really dead

Constitution, Legislation

 From the Desk of:
David Martin, Executive Vice President

MARCH 6, 2009

Late last week, the Senate passed the Broadcaster Freedom Amendment by a vote of 87-11. And while the liberal media rushed to declare the Fairness Doctrine dead, they all but ignored the “Durbin Amendment” that essentially primes the pump for silencing conservative speech through backdoor FCC regulations!

Eileen, the liberal media would have you believe that the Fairness Doctrine is dead—that the gag order against conservative talk has been once and for all lifted.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

Click here to listen to MRC founder Brent Bozell’s message to you on this latest attempt to hijack our Free Speech Rights.

++ A Stealth Attack on Your Free Speech Rights!

Eileen, the Durbin amendment requires the FCC to “take actions to encourage and promote diversity in communication media ownership.” Upon closer look, this “stealth” attack on Free Speech Rights is far more insidious because it empowers the government to
censor and control the airwaves through backdoor policies that create a vast array of new avenues by which the FCC can silence talk radio.

In other words, the Durbin amendment poses a much greater danger to our free speech rights because it expands the governmental control and censorship threat in ways we never before imagined!

++ Your Efforts More Important Than Ever

Given what just took place on Capitol Hill last week, there is little doubt that we are headed for a showdown over our Free Speech Rights Over the next 36 hours, we’re urging EVERY member of our MRC Action Team to alert friends and family about this stealth assault. Urge them to join with you in defending this God-given right by signing the petition here Time is short. Through this Durbin Amendment, liberal members of Congress now have a way to muzzle the conservative voice on the airwaves – we believe they will waste little time moving it forward.

Eileen, we cannot allow this backdoor assault to go unchallenged!

That’s why we’re counting on you to help us rally an additional 10,000 citizen signers of our Free Speech Alliance petition this weekend alone!

As always, thank you for standing with the MRC.

David Martin

P.S: Forward this message to 30-35 friends today. Urge them to join with you by clicking here.

Obama reverses Bush, funds failed embryonic stem cell research & more

Ethics, Medicine, President Obama, Pro Life / Pro Abortion

President of 'Hope' Gives Patients Anything But

For eight years, President George Bush proudly displayed in the Oval Office a bust of Sir Winston Churchill on loan from Great Britain. As a gesture of goodwill, the British government offered to let President Obama keep the statue during his term as a symbol of our longstanding friendship. Obama declined, shipping the bust back to England--and with it, the reminder of Churchill's great wisdom. It was he who warned that if evil prevails "all that we have known and cared for will sink into a new Dark Age, made more the lights of perverted science."

Today, that "perverted science" took root in America in a powerful new way, as President Obama tore down the wall between the federal government and embryonic stem cell experiments. By executive order, he took the first step in overturning the restrictions on taxpayer-funded embryonic stem cell research. His decision will allow government agencies to use federal money to encourage experiments on innocent human life, abolishing a ban that Bush put in place in 2001.

Supporters of the decision are quick to point out that Americans won't be financing the death of embryos. Although we may not be funding the killing, we are funding the killers. For now, the one law that prevents Obama from using taxpayer dollars to fund the destruction of embryos directly is still in place. The Dickey-Wicker amendment, approved by Congress every year since 1996, bans the use of federal funds to create human embryos. Unfortunately, even that safeguard could be in jeopardy under the liberal majority. As with the other pro-life riders, Dickey-Wicker must survive the appropriations process--a feat that could now be monumentally more difficult.

Obama's decision puts the government in a business which is not only unethical but also medically unnecessary. As recently as last week, researchers announced that they had successfully turned ethically created cells into the neurons that break down in Parkinson's disease. The week before, scientists produced evidence that they had treated Parkinson's in a patient with his own adult stem cells. Almost daily, researchers are celebrating new breakthroughs without compromising a single human life. Over 70 diseases and conditions have already been treated through adult stem cells, helping patients overcome everything from juvenile diabetes to heart disease. There is a common misconception that ESC research hasn't yielded these same results because it's not legal. It is. Only federal funding has been restricted. Private, commercial, and even state ESC experiments continue to no avail. That's why the ESC community is so desperate for federal funding. Many of the private ESC financiers see the method as an expensive failure. Even Dr. James Thomson, who first grew human ESC in 1998, has pulled his resources from embryos and invested in induced pluripotent (or iPS) cells, because, apart from the satisfying the moral dilemma, these cells are easier and cheaper to reproduce.

While the Obama administration and its supporters claim to be on the cutting-edge of science, the new President is pursing old technology. And thanks to the latest stimulus package, he will have at least $8 billion to do so. In a clever political move, Obama put the money in place at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) during the second "bailout," then moved ahead with rescinding Bush's restrictions. As he stated today, it will be up to NIH to decide in the next 120 days on the guidelines for ESC research.

Of course, scientists will lobby to obtain the money without strings or congressional oversight. According to the White House, their wish may be granted in the form of a presidential memo which Obama released today that seeks to insulate scientists from political accountability. In instances like this one, a lack of transparency is unacceptable, particularly when taxpayers are footing the bill. Harold Varmus, who co-chairs the President's Council on Science and Technology, defended the idea. "This is consistent with the President's determination to use sound scientific practice... instead of dogma in developing federal policy." Is it dogma or discipline? I guess that depends on your worldview. Are they restrictions or protections? Research or experiments? In this brave new world of commodifying human life, we should all be grateful for moral restraints. Please contact your leaders and urge them to uphold the ones that still exist. Urge them to right Obama's wrong by voting for the Patients' First Act. Instead of asking taxpayers to fund the destruction of life, this bipartisan bill would promote stem cell research that is making progress on principle.

Slipping fast toward a godless nation

Culture, Religion, United States

Give Me That Ole Time Religion

The Washington Post reported yesterday on a new survey of Americans' religious affiliation. Among the highlights: "The percentage of Americans who call themselves Christians has dropped dramatically over the past two decades," and "The only group that grew in every U.S. state since the 2001 survey was people saying they had 'no' religion." It sounded like bad news for faith--until we looked more closely at the numbers. This survey has now been done three times--in 1990, 2001, and 2008, but the decline in people identifying as Christian and the increase in those with "no religion" took place between 1990 and 2001. From 2001 to 2008, the percentage of Christians dropped only from 76.7% to 76.0%, and the number with no religion increased only from 14.2% to 15.0%.

Thanks to the media sensationalism, a key fact of the survey was buried. Among Christians, 44% identify themselves as "born again or evangelical," including substantial numbers of "mainline" Protestants and Roman Catholics. The report says, "These trends also suggest a movement towards more conservative beliefs and particularly to a more 'evangelical' outlook among Christians," and it calls this an "important historical trend." Meanwhile, the biggest decline among Christians is found in the more liberal "mainline" denominations, which plunged from 17.2% to only 12.9% just since 2001. The biggest drop came in two of the most liberal denominations, the Episcopalian and United Church of Christ, and it's not unreasonable to suspect that their growing embrace of homosexuality and same-sex marriage is a big part of the reason.

Hi Kyle,

I saw a few minutes of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Charlie Rose this week.  I don't know much about him, was pleased in general when he was appointed, being that he was seen as outside the educational establishment and in favor of the charter school movement.  I think having lots of choices in education is good for families.

However, this man has some alarming ideas.  Duncan wants to restructure community life around the schools; perhaps a great idea when communities are broken and disfunctional, but hardly a good choice for healthy families and communities.  He spoke of keeping schools open 12-13 hours a day (actually our high schools are open at least that long most days), holding school year round, 6 or 7 days a week, and having potlucks!  The President's agenda for education seems more conservative than Mr. Duncan's, but Mr. Duncan bears watching.

Wow! Now that is a good, cheap pizza

Good food / recipes, Just for fun!, Living well on less $

I cannot remember when we started the tradition of having frozen pizza on a Saturday night at our house. It may date back to when my husband and I were first married in the late 1970s. It is a tradition that has stuck over the years though. The brand may have changed, but menu has stayed the same. (I joke it is against my religion to cook on the weekend.)

At first we were loyal Tombstone fans. Then Brewer's came out; that was better. Brewer's went out of business, but Jacks seemed almost identical. Enter thick crust on the scene. But something happened when Jacks was bought by Kraft foods several years ago. Their pizza just didn't measure up and it got more expensive too. We switched to Orv's, which is so-so OK and tried a few others but no favorites. (Alas, the fabulous gourmet pizza I used to get at Aldi is no more.)

Know someone getting a bailout bonus? I do. (They aren't rich)

Politics, President Obama, Slipping fast!, Socialism / Marxism, TAXES, THE ECONOMY  (Ryan)   GOP lawmaker flips on AIG bonus tax  ...House Republicans split almost evenly last week over the Democrats' bill to impose a 90 percent retroactive tax increase on bonuses for employees at AIG and the other biggest recipients of federal bailout funds in a political bid to recoup the government's money. Conservatives rejected the bill as a punitive tax, but more than 80 Republicans voted for it, fearing the populist backlash over the AIG bonuses.   ME: those recipients included Wells Fargo, which as Sensenbrenner put it, were not allowed to leave the room until signing onto receiving tarp funds. They were cooerced into signing so as to not label the ones who did take funds with a scarlet letter. Now those employees, even those who make less than $50,000 a year might get their bonus taxed at 90%. How would you like that to be you?

It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking "those rich fat cats don't deserve a bonus" when it comes to bailout money. But remember, many of the workers for these financial institutions are just middle class workers, just like you. Some, through no fault of their own now find themselves in the position of being taxed at 90% on their bonus money because our government leaders (President Obama, Secretary of Treasury Geithner cannot make up their minds and wish to fuel the class warfare fires.Call your Senators and tell them to vote no.

But to say it isn't fair that the rich get to receive a 39% return on their deduction when others only can receive a 28% return shows his ignorance of the whole tax issue. It is OK to tax the rich at 39% buy not allow them the deduction return of 39%?

He is not alone in not understanding tax deductions. Mortgage interest incident.

Only Superman can be 2 places at once: School Board & Trustee meetings? + UPDATE

Elections, Elmbrook

I am still wondering about this: How can a person be in 2 places at once? The only one I know of who ever did that was Superman! And even he could not maintain all his super powers when he split himself in two. He was weaker when split apart.

Candidate Charles Wickens is running for both the Elmbrook School Board AND Elm Grove Trustee. That in itself would make me raise an eyebrow. (I used to have an alderman who ran for 3 offices at once.) But the situation is even more puzzling than with my ambitious former alderman, because the meeting days and times conflict with the Elmbrook and Elm Grove positions. Surely I must be mistaken?

Don't want to see Blue Mound Pick 'n Save go chichi, too bad about V Richards

City of Brookfield, Development, THE ECONOMY

Oh I know nothing ever stays the same, but I don't want to see the Blue Mound Pick 'n Save go. It was my favorite* Pick 'n Save store! Pick 'n Saves underwent a face lift in recent years, and in the process of trying to emulate a more V. Richards look in the stores and produce department, they eliminated refrigerator cases for their apples. Consequently, purchasing crisp apples became more challenging. The Blue Mound store was one of the few that still kept their apples chilled--if I was buying apples at nearly $2/pound, that is where I shopped.

Area Frank Lloyd Wright "American System-Built" home on PBS Sunday

History, Interesting places, WISCONSIN

My neighbor, Mike Lilek, is involved with a local Frank Lloyd Wright group that is restoring one of these "American System-Built" homes in Milwaukee. He emailed me today to say he and another project member will be interviewed for a segment of the PBS "In Wisconsin" program on Sunday morning, Chanel 10, at 11:30 am.

I believe there are other Frank Lloyd Wright homes in Milwaukee that the group has worked on, but it is the one at 2714 W. Burnaham in MIlwaukee that will be featured in the segment. It is an "American System-Built" home, Model B1.

Genetic engineering gone awry? Take a look; it's funny!

Food, Gardening, Just for fun!

If you have ever grown a vegetable garden, you know that sometimes the carrots or potatoes grow in some unusual shapes. I have harvested anatomically correct boy carrots or potatoes that looked like aliens. But I have never encountered produce that resembled the female form. That is until now.

Elmbrook School Board candidates weigh in on 4K

4-K, Education, Elections, Elmbrook

Last week, the article K4 back on the table in Elmbrook on Brookfieldnow caused quite a stir. The way it was written, it led people to believe that 2 board members who previously voted against 4K were now thinking about it. The article was heavy on the positive effects of 4K on the school budget without much detail regarding the negatives to the taxpayer.
