Brewers Last Stand
On September 1 the Brewers will make their last stand. It is the time that major league teams can expand their rosters. It is the time when tems decide which minor league players are in their future plans. It is the time when players are either upgraded, downgraded or traded. A few are just released. it is the time when contracts are an issue. It is the time to decide if a team is a real contender.
So let us take a look.
Right now the brewers are in 3rd place in their division about 12 games out of 1st place. Their pitching staff has not been improved enough to have 4 dependable starting pitchers. STOP THERE. HEARD ENOUGH ?
The plus factors are a team that can and should produce runs but do not do so each day. A defense that is at least even with other teams. But baseball history says that the winners are those with outstanding pitching in the final analysis.
This is no time to blame the front office or the manager. Good teams still win. This is no time to use hindsight cause foresight is proven to be better.
This is the time to make some important franchise decisions.
In my opinion the brewers must keep their lineup intact and at the same time start working on obtaining 2 or 3 frontline pitchers. First get rid of the weak links in the pitching staff : Parra, Davis, Hawkins, Bush and the pitching coach. None will makeup a championship team. It is not my problem how this is done, maybe eating some salaries, trades or outright releases. That done the front office needs to bring in any and all minor league pitchers that can throw strikes and from there take youth over experience. After that it is time to look at who is available under 30 years of age on other rosters. The trade bait are the above pitchers, Prince Fielder, Escobar (slightly overrated), Gomez, Dickerson, Gerut and Kottarus. Who stays? The entire bullpen including Hoffman for his team value and maybe pitching coach, outfielders, Braun, Cain and Hart; infielders Mcghee and Weeks and catcher Lucroy. What no Fielder or Escobar. Right. Mcghee or Hart can play 1st base and there are minor leaguers who can play shortstop and 1st base. Amongst them are Kohansky 1B, Lawrie (anywhere), Salmones C, and in spring training the entire AAA roster. Foolish ? No. There is an entire winter for these guys to improve their ability. There is an entire winter to coax JJ Hardy to come back. There is an entire winter to make decisions. Who will carry the offense. Not Fielder. Pitchers have his number. Not Escobar. A good talent but not a good bet. They are Braun, Hart, Mcghee, Weeks and Cain who I really like.
I was hoping to get Roy Oswalt and maybe next year. Lee is always available. Zambrano (Cubs) may be available.
Change Managers? Not now. Macha was not my favorite but he has proven to be a good example and a good baseball man. In the meantime. Dale Sveum and Don Money are ready and waiting.
Not a bad start the have Yo and Wolff as starters, with Narveson in the wings. Thats 3. Only need 1 more.

it sure looks like prince is gone before next season. with all the young pitchers and young up and coming stars like cain, cruz, gamel and others it looks pretty good for 2011. pitchers like Yo, Wolfe, Capuano and Narveson are a capable starting pitching staff, plus the big ace we get for prince. with the chance of rogers and jeffress as starters, thats 6. bush is a free agent and parra is trade bait. maybe coffey is also trade bait. guys like dickerson, gomez , inglett are gone. Escobar needs a challenge and if cruz is just the same Alcedes is also trade bait. (cmon home JJ). Counsell is valuable and could be kept if there is room. for prince we must get a 15 game winner.

my pvt. law practice has made my time short to keep up with new blogs. my apologies. for those who keep up, the Green Bay Packers , in my prediction were destined to lose. why? they would be 1 and 1 on the season. Chi Soldiers Field is a tough place to play with the wind from the lake and the fans. the penalties were expected as the Pack had to play hard to have a chance to win. QB Cutler was lucky and will not last. my only comment about the Pack is that we never thought that ryan grant would be missed this much. maybe his injury is career ending. so, get somebody. if that guy lynch from bills is available sign him for 2 yrs. just in case. Lombardi did it when he lost hornung and taylor on injuries. he signed mercein and pitts for the super bowl and won. you got to play beyond injuries and the pack is too slow to understand that. running backs get better with experience cause the hold onto the ball. i like Kuhn but he cannot go far down the field. i also question throwing to Quarless for a TD. the pass was not perfect but DD would get it. BTW. when inside the 5 yard line on 1st down Run !

I wish you'd mention something about the rooster who plays for the Kansas Prairie Hens. He's really good...but he's got fowl balls!

Let's forget about the listless Brewers and move on to America's real game...FOOTBALL! Packers offense looks very solid, but the defense and special teams isn't looking so hot at the moment. Injuries and the absence of exceptional second string is worrisome.

in my opinion, having been there, baseball needs to improve. there are so many good players in the minor leagues who do not get a chance. i know of no rule that prevents a major league team from bringing up a minor league player who benches a big salary guy. i certainly hope that the contracts do not state that the big salary guy must play.

Dick, did you see Brent totally dominate the Sea Gulls Thursday night? What a performance. Had he stayed in the game he might have set a record with two sacks and four interceptions. That was certainly where he was headed.

Say Dick, have you noticed that the Viqueens continue to build this years team on the rock solid foundation of ex-Packers? Javon Walker is their latest acquisition. Proving that Favre has advanced from play calling to player selection.

The prima donna didn't come to training camp and played just a few downs in pre-season. Is this guy so egotistical that he doesn't think that the other players have to get used to him? He has turned into the most disgusting buffoon in sports, and Childress is the weakest head coach in the NFL. Brent is running the show! Oh how I hope he gets killed!

With Brent behind the wheel, how can the Viqueens avoid a trip to the bowl?
Hey and how about last night's (Saturday night) Brewer game! Did you see that rookie bring Braun home to win it in the 11th? (or was it the 12th?). Those boys refuse to rise to the top. But - by golly - they won't allow themselves to hit bottom either.
Who do you know wants to sell us some great pitching as in Burdette, Jolly, Spahn, et. al.?

The guy really is a one man team!
